[4928] Hyle B Pennington Letters

TO Miss Louise Pennington, Worton, Kent Co, MD from Boston Oct 6 08

(The letter I wrote I addressed to either Mr. Will Pennington or Mr. Burke Pennington Kennedyville, MD I thought that would reach both your father and uncle H.B.P.

About a month ago I sent your Father a letter asking him some things about the Pennington family-as he has not replied I conclude the subject did not interest him.

My cousin, Ada P of Phila., gives me your address and thinks you would be able to help me. She also gave me the address of Miss Elizabeth P of Kennedyville.

Have you folks any old family Bibles or old books of any kind with Pennington family records in it Births, deaths, or marriages? Can you tell me your grandfather’s name and date of his birth and death and do you know who his father was. If I am not mistaken you grandfather was Atkey P or his bro.

I am just getting started on the subject and if you can find any old records down there that would be of use I would certainly appreciate it if you would send me what you can find.

My object is to follow the family back to the first P who came here from England- back of that it will I think be easy to do.

As I understand it, my father (Benj. F. P.) and your father were first cousins- (actually 1st cousins)

Would be glad to send you what information I have when it is shape if the subject is one in which you are interested. Hoping to hear form you I am sincerely, Hyle B. Bennington 49 Howard Street Melrose Mass.

Second letter dated Boston 11/10/08

My dear Louise:

Should have written before but since the election have had little time to myself.

Am with the above (Paine Webber and Co.) Bankers and Brokers and bus is certainly booming this last week.

Yes Elizabeth wrote me giving me a good deal of information. I am not discouraged that Mr. Atkey P has so far remained a mystery but it will take time to run him down.

Your grandfather (Fredus Ryland Pennington)and mine (Ashbury Sutton Pennington) were only two out of a number of children and I hope to find some old records among the other children they were mostly girls and would perhaps have taken more care of anything of the sort then the men

The Delaware City P’s are descend from the only other bro (Alrich Ryland Pennington) your grandfather had besides mine.

Did you or Elizabeth (if you see her soon ask her) ever hear of any cousins or 2nd cousins named Vandergrift or Vanheckle. They are ones I want to locate, as I’m sure no man ever had so many children and not on know of his grandfather.

I have recd a good deal of information about different branches of the family but what I want to locate and what would be the only thing we all have in common is Atkey’s Father ( James and Elizabeth Beaston Pennington)- I have a list of a number of people to write but have not been able to do so yet.

I have never looked for him in MD thinking he was born in Del. Until lately but there are a number of Depts of the State Gov that I will tackle next.

I hope in a few days to be able to have the time to write a number of letters.

Atkey is a name that is in nearly every branch of the family.

I thank you very much for writing and will let you know from time to time with what success I am meeting. With best wishes, Your cousin Hyle.
